Trying to remember the needle lengths and locations from Table 29-5 (pg 754) and Table 29-4 (pg 752), this is what has helped me.
For needle sizes, the standard for adults is 5/8" to 1 1/2" in the deltoid. Children are a quarter of our size, so take 1/4" off-5/8" to 1 1/4", still in the deltoid. Everybody gets 5/8" to 1" in the vastus lateralis. And adults get a straight 1 1/2" in the ventrogluteal (don't read into that).
As for where to give it, the little ones don't have much meat, so start at the vastus lateralis. As you get older, toddlers and children, you can start to use the deltoid (vastus is still OK) When you are grown up, the deltoid becomes the norm, but the ass is OK too (ventrogluteal).
If you are giving biologicals, rabies, or Hep B, the deltoid is still the norm. Still gotta use caution though with the little ones and stay in the vastus lateralis. Anything that is a pain in the ass (irritating), give it in the ass (ventrogluteal).
Still looking for a table of standard needle gauges.
